Every young person should get €100k tax credit instead of a lifetime CAT allowance

There's a topical article on euronews: https://www.euronews.com/business/2024/04/22/inheritance-tax-an-unjustified-class-privilege-or-a-tax-too-far Some interesting insights into a few countries treatment of inheritance tax.

Payment and withdrawal in non-EU, non-Eurozone - Revolut, N26, other options?

I have been using N26 for many years predominantly because of their favourable non-Euro currency treatment and non-Euro ATM withdrawals. Haven't watched the FX rates very closely but by and large they were fine. There are no network fees. Of course, you always run the risk of an ATM charging...

Every young person should get €100k tax credit instead of a lifetime CAT allowance

We have no kids. We own our house in Dublin, and earning very well, with another 10'ish years to go until retirement. The logical person to inherit whatever will be available to inherit is my one niece, who lives in Austria. My retirement plans do not include staying in Ireland, inheritance...

    Smart Meters

I have a SmartMeter for some time now, with a not-Smart plan (ie, same rate for all hours of day) but one that does the automated readings. Unless you really like the process of submitting manual meter readings, or going to miss the chat with the meter reading person if/when it shows up 1-2...

    Business Bank Account Recommendation

Not sure what the size of your business is - but I banked with Danske with a previous company and I found their corporate services very good. (Note: it was a large multinational company)

Bank of Ireland will not let me withraw from a/c by Credit Transfer/ EFT

The regular saver don’t allow you to do this. (Well, the ones I have used in any case).

Bank of Ireland will not let me withraw from a/c by Credit Transfer/ EFT

There's not much to complain about really, this is covered by T&C's. Worst case, open a current account, with draw the money into current account, ETF to different bank, close both accounts

Asked for PIN for low cost item

I don’t think I ever got asked for my pin when tapping the card here in Ireland. Phone tapping is essentially the same as card tapping from a user perspective. (Ignoring technical details)

Asked for PIN for low cost item

In Germany you can essentially tap for any amount (even above €50) but also need to provide the pin. There’s rarely a need to put the card into the device therefore. Contactless doesn’t mean no pin, generally speaking. It depends on the requirements of the payment service provider. So it can...

    BOI Current account opening

"it isn't you, it is them". I have no help for you but "thoughts and prayers". BOI banking experience is probably the worst of the three local banks that are left. Eventually, things might work. Or not

    Assigning mortgage protection policy

You don't need to engage a solicitor, only need to inform the bank and of course ensure the MPP is assigned to the correct mortgage. In my case, the insurance company did notify the bank.

Married couple CGT exemption for spouse without income

I am not a tax expert. Interesting. Here’s some further information, but it doesn’t go into the exemptions specifically. Maybe revenue doesn’t really care. https://www.revenue.ie/en/tax-professionals/tdm/income-tax-capital-gains-tax-corporation-tax/part-44/44-02-01.pdf

Married couple CGT exemption for spouse without income

Looks like you can do that. you will (potentially) gain the princely sum of around €419, but your wife owns the crypto asset. Also, Revenue might see this as an act of tax avoidance. Your choice.

    Wise international debit card

Side note: Is stamp duty payable on cards issued by financial institutions with no presence in Ireland, and if so, how would one go about paying it?

    BOI Current account opening

You don’t have to use BOI’s switching process. Even if you would want to move your day to day banking, the switching process doesn’t provide significant benefits over doing things manually.

Revolut Launch Money Market Fund Product

€55 euro a month? That is … hefty. From the wording it also looks like they are funds so there’s some risk associated with it. Also, what’s the ‘tax’ here? Doesn’t look like DIRT?

Bank of Ireland App warning about Android version

Not only out of date version of an app - it is bad practice to use an (old) phone that doesn’t get security updates, especially for sensitive things like online banking. Old Android versions are a security risk, which is why app developers stop supporting them (one reason anyway). Better replace...

Land registry still shows charge despite mortgage cleared and deeds returned

You go to https://www.landdirect.ie/pramap/ Select the property, and go to "add to basket" This will get you a pop-up to select the type of folio. This isn't a map just the details of the register.

Land registry still shows charge despite mortgage cleared and deeds returned

Ended up sending a letter to PTSB on the matter and asked them to do the discharge (again). After not hearing from them for three weeks, I called them and they confirmed they re-did the edischarge and that they also sent me a letter confirming the same over a week ago. Looking forward to...
