    State Savings Customer Service.

Bank holiday weekend, civil service ‘privilege day’, etc. No big deal. I was just happy to see the money in the account after reading a lot of negative posts on this thread.

    State Savings Customer Service.

Agree with Despondant above. Got reminder 2 weeks ahead of maturity of 10 year Bond, sent bank header to confirm new IBAN (UB gone!), and requested encashment. A week later got letter confirming all well and stating payment within 5 working days. Also got notification on app confirming same. 2...

    Public Sector Car Insurance schemes

I think going direct to the Insurance Company is best. Anybody in between them and you is looking for moolah from you.

    Antique clock repair

Maybe value the clock before repair? I had an antique clock (maybe > 100 years) and was told to even get a repair estimate, it would cost €100, and then, who knows what cost to repair? I brought it home and love it, even though it doesn’t work.

Holiday home Spain or Portugal ?

We sold our apartment in France last year, not because we wanted to, but we felt we had to. We loved everything about the place, by the beach SW France, lots of amenities within walking distance etc. But, French inheritance tax and accompanying bureaucratic processes made us realise that it...

    Downsizing to a bungalow

Once kiddies had left home, we downsized from big 4 bed house, 3 living rooms, big back garden etc. in Dublin to 3 bed small bungalow in Wexford, in our mid 50’s. Early retirement meant no commute either. It’s the best thing we ever did, house about half the size of our Dublin house, no stairs...

    Certificate of existence

I just go to the local post office when I get the form every year and no problem to have it witnessed there.

Kudos to @Lightning for maintaining the best buys threads

Thank you Lightning. Just prompted me to cash in those existing State Savings earning basically zilch and switch in October. If I could, I’d buy you a drink.

Process for new payee with AIB

If you do a date search of your payment logs it will bring up all payments in between the dates entered. Should be able to retrieve all historic payments this way.

    Car Hire Gatwick Airport

Whatever you do, make sure the company you choose is based at the Car Rental facility at the airport. Most of the cheaper options are offsite in some area nearby, which means waiting for a shuttle to take you there (could be 5 miles or more) and then filling out the paperwork there before...

An Post. What is a registered item and what is an insured item?

Registering an item with an Post only guarantees safe return to the receiver’s local postal service and not to the actual address. I discovered this a couple of years ago when I sent an item to the States. I registered it and when it never arrived I was told that it had arrived at the US Mail...

Health Insurance VHI/Laya/Irish Life cover differences for emergency treatment abroad

Travel Insurance will cover outpatient treatment abroad. I’m with Laya and only discovered after arriving home from the States having broken a few fingers and gotten outpatient treatment in a US hospital that it wasn’t covered by our policy. I had sent all the hospital documentation to Laya to...

Replacing or refurbishing a gravel driveway?

Don’t go for stippled concrete, needs to be power washed at least annually.

Tesco Mobile: No data when travelling in Europe and not on WI-FI

2 years of frustrating dealings with Tesco Mobile where I had no Data Roaming outside Ireland have resulted in me ditching Tesco for GoMo. They kept insisting that Europe had changed from minimum 3g to 4g and that in Ireland we really only have 3 1/2 G.

Downsizing. Has anyone done this and any regrets?

Downsized from large house in Dublin to village in Wexford almost 20 years ago. From 2 storey house to detached bungalow. Best decision ever. Hubby’s arthritic knees greatly improved, gave away all furniture and accumulated stuff to Freecycle. So glad to be here during Covid, walk to beach every...
