Suitable account for saving irregular amounts for child

Hi, My child's grandmother has asked me to set up a bank account for my child where she can lodge small amounts of money (approx €50) for the child at irregular intervals. Would I be better to set up a credit union account/post office account or potentially take the cash and buy prize bonds...

    Vodafone / Verizon Sale

Hi, Thanks in advance. This thread has really simplified things for a novice (as you can probably guess from the following question!) How is the capital gains tax calculated? Is it based on the amount invested initially (in my case when I bought Eircom shares)? Then is the exemption the...

    Staying in hotel with baby

Thanks again for the replies. What did you do regarding storage of bottles? Hotel fridges are usually quite small so I don't think we'd fit all her bottles. It'd be a pain to have to make up bottles a couple of times a day. Triona

    Staying in hotel with baby

Hi, My husband & I had our first baby 3months ago. We're considering going away to a hotel for a couple of nights with the baby, probably Galway. Are we nuts to be even considering it? Does anyone have any tips to make the stay easier? My concerns are mainly around washing & sterilising...

Tax credits while on maternity leave

Just thought I'd give an update on this based on a call with Revenue. There was no advantage in me transferring any tax credits. The maternity benefit is paid each week (€265). I will be taxed on this at 41% i.e. €107 each week has to go back to Revenue. This will amount to approx €2000 which I...

Tax credits while on maternity leave

Hi, I hope someone can help me determine the best approach for tax while I'm on maternity leave. Up to the end of May , I earned €55500 (including a €20000 bonus). My annual gross salary is €90000 (excluding bonus). I am now on maternity leave and am not being paid by my employer. My maternity...

    Changing health insurance policy mid-pregnancy

Hi, Our health insurance policy is due for renewal on 1st May. I'm pregnant and our baby is due on 1st June. Usually I would shop around for health insurance each year. I'm just wondering if there are any pitfalls that I should be aware of this year if I change policy. I don't want any...

Tax credit cert - tax band increase

Thanks Joe. I thought those expenses would appear in the Tax credits section (there is an entry here for flat rate expenses 12.80), I didn't think there would also be an increase (64.00) in the tax rate bands. Would appreciate any information - I'm trying to make sure I understand my tax...

Use of water from condenser dryer

Thanks very much. I'll definitely use it in the iron as our water is quite hard and it gets clogged up. Will also use it for the plants. Thanks again, Triona

Use of water from condenser dryer

Hi, Does anyone know if the water from a condenser dryer would be ok to use for watering plants? I'm a bit wary in case the levels of washing powder remaining in it may be high but it seems like a waste of water to throw it down the sink. If not plants, has anyone ideas for other potential...

Using a credit card in US

Hi, Some probably stupid questions follow! 1. If I put money on my credit card to use in the US, is the recommendation to use it as a credit card or use it to withdraw cash from ATM? I assume it's to use as a credit card but just wanted to double check in case I'm missing something! 2. If...

    Dog Travel Sickness

Both from a sickness point of view and a security point of view! One of our dogs used to get sick and after we harnessed her, she stopped. I can't say for definite that it was the harness but it seemed to help. ] The harnesses allow the dogs to lie down. You can get them in any pet shop.
