Asked for PIN for low cost item

Not unusual in my experience. My card allows for 3 tapped transactions then I must use a PIN before being able to tap again.

"Council will buy my house and rehouse me"?

I have heard it happen once before. A former work colleague told me that her mother made a similar arrangement with Dublin City Council a number of years ago (I don't know what money changed hands). The woman was housed in an apartment designated for senior citizens. The woman was in poor...

Can I buy the freehold title on a lease hold house with a manhole in the garden?

It could be the mains water supply. There are cottages in Drogheda where the mains water pipework and manholes run through the back gardens. These houses couldn't have water meters installed, as the installers required access to private property (so owners just said no).

Public servant €8k taken from final gratuity for widows and orphans 2017

Some people (myself included) found that, if they had opted out of the S&C scheme and were later opted in due to a change of job, S&C contributions were owed back to the date of first employment. In my case, this date pre-dated the scheme itself, which seemed very unfair. Any arrears due are...

Public servant €8k taken from final gratuity for widows and orphans 2017

I got a similar document from my HR when I retired (civil service) - mine was referred to as an IoT document (presume an old reference to Inspector of Taxes). It was part of a sheaf of paperwork I received.

What is the "pension claim number" and where can I find it?

Your PPSN will be sufficient as a pension claim number. SW used to issue pension claim numbers, but now use the PPSN.

PS pension: death-in-service benefit for a single childless person

Civil and public servants were automatically opted in to S & C scheme once they joined after 1984 or thereabouts (I opted out in the early 80s, but was opted in when I joined another PS employer in 1986)

20 year old living with relatives & social welfare payments

Your niece won't be assessed on your income, only income from parent(s) or step-parents is assessed. What may be investigated as part of her application is whether she has moved away from home in order to avoid the means test.

    Electric Ireland bills....paid through Ptsb

Could you set up a new bill payee with the new IBAN instead of trying to change the old one? You could then delete the old IBAN.

    Carer’s leave

Does your employer allow for unpaid leave? That might suit your situation better (as it's generally granted for a week or two rather than long-term).

Brendan, To answer your second question, she can't claim a Contributory OAP based on her ex-husband's records - it must be her own record.

How do PS employers calculate service for pension?

Each PS organisation will (or should!) keep service records. If a person moves from one organisation to another, their service record should be transferred too. PRSI records aren't used to determine service for PS pension - as S Class mentioned, a part time worker could have a "full time" PRSI...

There was also an inpatient charge of 80 euro per night (max 10 nights per year) for non medical card patients. This was abolished in April 2023. The Drug Payment Scheme only covers medicines on the approved list - if prescribed medication isn't on the list, it must be paid for in addition to...

    Medical card with UK pension

Medical Card holders don't pay for prescription drugs (there is a per item charge of 1 euro or 1.50). The Drug Payment Scheme, which sets an upper limit of 80 euro per month per family (for specified drugs only) is for anyone, not just retired people.
