Which of the Irish retail banks still offer a NON-contactless debit card as an alternative?

UB is trying to shove an unwanted and unrequested contactless debit card at me. Do any of the Irish banks offer their customers a say?

n.b. Nationwide UK do, by the way.

Is this the new bank card that UB sent me, where transactions under 30 Euro I think, means you don't need to stick it in a machine and put in a pin code?

I don't have an issue with it, but I haven't used it yet. It's just progress. I find it odd you'd use the word 'shove' though in your post. I presume it's just a roll out of a new product.

Personally i think its a great thing. However if you are concerned about the possibility of it being read by a criminal type, remote in my opinion but possible, you can get a metal wallet designed to prevent this.

I got one as a birthday pressie recently and while I am not concerned about the possibility of my card being read, the wallet is great, no build up of junk receipts etc.

I think 'shove' is the appropriate word in this context. The T&Cs on these cards mean that the banks are never liable if your card gets hacked and misused, you are.

From BOI Visa card site "Even though you do not need to enter your pin contactless payments are just as secure as chip and pin transactions as contactless Visa debit cards use the same secure technology as any other Visa chip and pin cards. Contactless cards include the latest security features required by the payment card industry.

As an extra precaution from time to time you will be prompted to enter your PIN to complete the transaction."

"contactless payments are just as secure as chip and pin transactions" in other words not secure at all as evidenced by the duplication of chip and pin cards by skimmers, scammers and scanners, shoulder surfers and fake ATMs. Fake readers anyone - they're already on sale from the Far east.

When they came out first my bank, B,O,I, sent me one . I went into the branch and told them i wanted one without the touch facility and they sent the old type to me. This happened a few years ago when the max limit for a transaction was 15 euro. The reason i did not want it was , i asked the bank would they reimburse me if it was lost or stolen and they said no, i said to them that I may not notice it was missing for a week as i generally use a credit card, and the bank was adamant that i would be at a loss

You could get a Revolut Card (non Irish) which is a contactless card but using the app on your smartphone (yes you need a smartphone) you can switch on and off the contactless function as you please.

This card which is not FREE could be linked to your Irish Current Account.

You could just ask UB for the non contactless card.
they will do this if you ask them.

As far as I know, all Revolut cards are now contactless...

All are now issued contactless but this function can be turned on and off in real time using the phone app.

PTSB allow you to turn the Contactless feature On or Off under the Other Services menu option at the ATM also
(although they didn't seem to want to let anyone know about it)

Thanks Charley, I was not aware if you lost your card and it was fraudently used that the banks won't reimburse you. If this happens in the UK, customers are reimbursed.

I am going to cancel this facility on the ptsb machine first thing tomorrow.
