Just filled in my medical card review online and we haven't even qualified for gp visit card this time. We seem to fall short by about €35 when I work it out. My neighbour minds my kids while we work at a cost of €100 a week for 38 weeks a year. I did not declare this as my childminder is a friend and not registered. But declaring this cost would allow us a gp card. Anyone in this situation can advise? We have 4 kids under 12 but only one under 6 ( will be allowed gp visit free) Thanks

I'd be looking after my kids first and foremost and declaring my expenses. Your neighbour's tax affairs are her own business.

If you're minding children in your own home aren't you allowed to do so without declaring for tax as long as its under (say) E15,000 per annum?

Yes but you must be notified to your local county Childcare Committee. And the limit is €15,000 per annum but if it goes 1c above that then the minder is liable for tax on the whole lot!

What about if it's a grandparent that minds grandchildren and she receives €50 a week for this. Would that affect her pension (work pension)? Also would she be liable for tax as she is getting the €50 on top of a work pension? Do not want to provide a letter for medical card application if it means she is going to loose out financially. Thanks.
