Restaurant Lunchtime LoCal cafe in Ashtown - would not provide dressing following request.

I at a restaurant with my mother today - the LoCal cafe in Ashtown. We ordered 2 salad plates with smoked salmon (for 21.90)

The plate when it came had some coleslaw, but was nearly half just shredded lettuce. I asked for some dressing. The waitress came back to say the chef wouldn't allow it. I asked to see the manager and she said the same - that it wasn't available on this salad.

I must point out it was not that they didn't have dressing, as the special of the day was chicken caesar salad with dressing...but we were told that we couldn't have it.

Needless to say last time I'll be there.

Are they calorie counted salads or something going by name of cafe? Maybe if it is they are trying to do you a favour :)

Is this the place?

It is a healthy food only style cafe. Maybe they communicated it to you the wrong way. Anyway, according to their website, they want to hear the bad stuff too so drop them a line and let them know. You may get a better reason as to why they didn't give you any of that nasty dressing on your lettuce. ;)

"As a design team in their company InArc Design, they designed a couple of restaurants and cafes..." If their web-site is a reflection of their design work then it doesn't auger well.

"speak to our staff, they’re very friendly and all too willing to help wherever they can" Is this reflective of your experience? "COFFEE'S & TEA'S" anyone? I'm unsure what aspect or attribute of either is being espoused. "Cold Press Juices" doesn't install confidence nor do the four menu buttons, Breakfast, Lunch, Treats, Drinks that do nothing or the View Menu button below them that leads to a 6 or 7 page PDF.

They also seem to make specific health-related claims for their food which I'm sure has been adequately researched and verified.

Like a lot of food outlets, they are being encouraged (forced ?) by the busy-workers, HSE/Local Authority to include calorific information and the protein, fat and carb content of each menu item. If you request a sauce not included on the menu with your dish they cannot supply it as it invalidates the information given on the menu. I believe you may be some of the sufferers from this nonsense.

I know it sounds like a bad bureaucratic joke but speaking to the proprietors of a local take-away, they have been instructed to do the same for their take-away menu, but cannot. If they do, a "chilli cheese-burger", cannot be served without cheese as it changes the "must have" information on the menu", nor can they substitute extra salad for the cheese or "hold the onions" for the same reason.

The world is going mad, lead by the make-works.

I think someone's pulling your leg, maybe from a Brexit fan perhaps trying to push an agenda?

There's no such obligation - display of calories has been suggested all right, but so far there's no requirement to display any content information other than (since a few months ago) information on a specific set of allergens - see https://www.fsai.ie/legislation/food_legislation/food_information/14_allergens.html

As to the original point raised by the OP, it's certainly an odd response to a customer request, and certainly one that wasn't handled well. If it were me, I'd raise it with them, either through their Web site or Facebook page and see what they say.

Link broken on their website so I mailed them. I got an even more strange reply in the lines that lettuce with cucumber doesn't need dressing. Sorry if I want dressing I'll have it. Anyway I did get an apology but I would have expected some gesture as well.

Btw some of the dishes did have calories beside them but the salad plates didn't
