Pension fund transfer USA to Ireland

Hi

I worked in USA in the 1990s and rolled my pension contributions into an American IRA (Individual Retirement Account) on leaving my last employment, where they have lived ever since.

I have been living and working in Ireland in recent years and have been contributing to the occupational pension fund of my employer. I would now like to move the IRA funds into my Irish pension fund and retain its tax-protected status.

The Irish pension management company are happy to facilitate this but I'm not clear whether the American IRS will view this as a distribution of income and deem it taxable accordingly. I've reviewed the tax treaty between USA and Ireland [broken link removed], but can't seem to find any relevant info.

I would be very grateful for any information or experiences you can share.

Thanks
Stan
