My dad got a call this morning to say his atm card was cloned. he only ever uses it in the Ulster bank in blanchardstown. anyway he went to the branch at 11am and they told him he was the third one there today. his card was accessed from us, one more from Canada and one from India.

Just a warning

I get 58 replies to this on boards and 78 on Facebook yet not one here...

Not quite sure what you want.

Not to sound too unsympathetic, but card cloning happens. ATM's get hit with devices, shoulder surfers etc. Accounts are pillaged as much as possible before bank/cardholder becomes aware so on, so forth.

You put a warning out, cardholder has notified and the issuer investigations are underway.

True. typing with new nails on new phone and trying to calm my dad down at time.

Anyway word out now. More widespread than I thought. my dad had a medically required drink and found tales of at least 30 people affected

The local councillor has taken it up

Not sure what the local councilor could possibly add to this to be honest, I'd rather have focus the on fixing some other problems we face in Dublin: Like housing, or transport, or planning.
Cloning is always an issue, people need to be careful when using their cards - and they very often aren't.

It's that five atms have now been identified and all reported but nothing done.

Card cloning should never happen at at ATM IN A BRANCH. Deliberate bold caps.
What kind of joke operation is the bank running that they can't even be trusted to keep their own ATMs safe?
I think a formal complaint should be lodged with the bank if you are 100% sure the card is only used in the branch. The bank's procedures are simply not good enough. If you are using an ATM in the bank's premises, they are responsible for keeping it safe. Full stop.

One in rose lawn, one on main Street, one on clonsilla road, one in carpenters town , one at supervalu.

All reported to guards and bank. Nothing done

I never said it was in branch. All these outside

Another one outside nandos

But have they? And how does one know what UB is or isn't doing internally?

Seems like speculation is rampant, but actual proof isn't forthcoming.

....All reported to guards and bank. Nothing done

Perhaps they are monitoring the ATMs in question to try and catch the people behind the fraud ?

As Willy Fogg says, how does one know what UB is or isn't doing internally (or in cooperation with the Gardai etc) ?

....Well if it that prevalent, surely banks should be upping their game on ATM security.

You would think that the answer was simply to design a more secure ATM, but perhaps the costs are prohibitive, or outweigh the cost of the various frauds (possibly after the Banks collect whatever insurance cover they have to help offset the risk ?).

Ultimately, I think it's down to a case of the never ending game of cat and mouse between honest and dishonest people - the fraudsters will always be trying to commit fraud and the good guys will always be trying to catch them.

Well, if my card was cloned I would never use that ATM again unless the bank could prove to me that it was safe.

Cards get cloned at ATMs by fraudsters fitting a device on to the ATM to record the card details and potentially a camera on the ATM to record a PIN. it's easily done and every bank in Ireland has probably had it done at some stage to one of it's branches ATMS. These devices are hard to spot unless you know what you are looking for

I note the OP on here saying "nothing has been done" How do you know that? How do you know that the ATM still has devices fitted to it?. Once a card has been cloned it can be used in any ATM anywhere until the card is blocked. Even if devices are removed it's a 30 second job to refit them. As well as that, a lot of these ATM's may be branded as belonging to a particular bank and may network back to the bank's systems but are managed by a 3rd party.

If the bank hasn't blocked the cloned card and it continues to be used, that's a different story and could be sheer incompetence by the bank. Regardless the account holder should be able to get refunded providing they've reported the card.

Cards can also be cloned on other devices, for example a POS device in a shop can easily have a device added by a dodgy shop assistant and it's easy for them to see your PIN.

Key thing here is people should be checking their online banking daily
