I live 10 min from town and often take the dog for a walk. I can understand not taking dogs into food shops but what is the general consensus on other shops, can I take them in? if not they should have something to tie the dog to. Shopping centres are basically a street with a cover over, can I take the dog into a shopping centre if I don't enter the shops, it makes it very difficult to go shopping with the dog.

I'm pretty sure I've seen stickers on shopping centre entrances that say "no dogs". Some people dont like dogs, some dogs dont like people. And they are probably concerned a dog will take a dump in the shopping centre or go for someone which leaves them possibly open for letting animals in.

To be fair, this isnt the wild west where the saloon leaves a big wood post outside to tie your horse. They arent obliged to provide anything.

FWIW I am a dog owner.

Why not take the dog for a walk separate from your shopping trips? It can't be much fun for the dog or other nervous shoppers to have the dog tied up outside.

As a parent of a child that does not like dogs, I would be extremely annoyed if some randomer was walking their dog through Dundrum or Liffey Valley or wherever where my child might come across it. Shopping centres are NOT simply streets with a cover on. They are heated and lit and provide facilities far beyond the simple high street. If everyone did it, who would want to buy clothes with dog hairs on them? walk around sh1t all the time? and have to put up with dodging leashes and animals?

If you want to walk your dog, take it to the park, beach or anywhere you like...OUTDOORS.

There would be so many issues with allowing dogs into centres. They may wee and poo in the place. Who's going to clean that up? They may get aggressive, frighten other patrons. Their hair gets all over the place and it will stick to some of the merchandise.

You can always tie your dog to a bike rack if you want. I know I wouldn't do that to my dog, I'd be afraid someone would rob him.

Best leaving him at home.

As others have said dogs are really not allowed into shops and probably rightfully so. But I can understand if a person is getting on in years and might find it difficult to take their pet for a walk, exercise, etc. If that is the case there might be someone close by who would be delighted to do it for you, we're a good sort of people sometimes and you may find a neighbour or someone close by who would do that for you but shopping centres, etc are a no no for fairly obvious reasons.

3 reasons
Publiic liability insurance : Centre /shop owner likely to be liable as well as dog owner if anything goes wrong.
LegAlity AFAIK its illegal to alllow in indoor restaurant/pub or near food as i understand it
Business sense- as other have said dog hair poo pee wont help sales

I was in a small local shopping centre in Paris last year and there was a lady in the centre with her dog (which was on an extending lead). A child came zooming round a corner on a bike and got caught up in the lead and fell head first off the bike. There was a lot of screaming and a lot of blood...
My sister lives in Paris and cannot stand the way dogs are allowed everywhere!

As mentioned above please don't ever leave your dogs tied up outside shops. Dog theft is a major problem at the moment and the dogs are used to either gain a ransom, for breeding or far worse as bait and this happens a lot more than people think. I spoke with someone recently who told me that they tied their dog up just inside the door of a shopping centre and could see the dog from where they were shopping. A guy came into the centre, picked up the dog and checked if it was neutered. When they saw that it was they put it back down and ran away.

Why should the child be riding in a shopping centre? He could hit someone, don't blame the dog

As I said, there should be somewhere to tie the dog outside

... or maybe they treat dogs like people because they've a greater level of respect for these animals than some other nations ? :)

Respect ? For dogs ? Dogs that defecate in the street ? Dogs that urinate in the street ? Dogs that bark at passersby, in a manner that would constitute assault if done by a person ? Dogs that bark all night disturbing people trying to sleep ? Respect for dogs ?
