How do I register?


Click on the Log in or Sign Up button The image above shows you its location on the home screen. It's the black button on the top right-hand side of the image. (You will need to use this button to log in to your account each time if you don't tick the Stay logged in box.

  • You type in your name. This is the name that will be shown with your messages. Once set, this cannot be changed.
  • You type in your password
  • You confirm your password
  • You select a gender (if you wish)
  • You select a date of birth (if you wish)
  • You type in a verification word or numbers shown in a box.
  • You tick the box confirming that you agreed to the terms and rules
  • You click on the button Sign Up
After registering, an email will be sent to the email address. You must click on the link in the email to finish the process. If you don't do this, you will not be able to post. We use your email address only in the event of abuse of our posting guidelines - e.g. defamatory posts, spam and offensive posts.

If you don't get the email asking you to click on the link, it's because your spam filters or your employer's spam filters have quarantined the letter. Contact your administrator and ask them to release the email.

How do I Post a new Thread on AAM?

Have a look at the image shown above. This sample is taken in the Consumer Forum on the Home Page.


To Post a new Thread or Topic:

  • You must enter the relevant Forum where you wish to create your new Thread or Topic. All the forums are available on the Home Page. Click on the blue button on the right-hand side called Post New Thread
  • Type your question
  • Click on the button Post Reply
What happens if I Post a Thread in the wrong forum in error?

  • It will be moved to the correct forum by a moderator/administrator.
  • Check your Alerts button to the right of your member name. Sample image here.

I need to amend or I have been requested to amend my Thread title, how do I do this?

Check out the image above. You will see a button on the top right-hand side of the page called Thread Tools. Click on the link called Edit Title and amend the title.​

  • Click on the Thread Tools arrow
  • Select Edit Titile
  • Amend the thread title
  • Click on the Save Changes button.

How do I format the text in my post?

You can select any of the formatting features for example: Bold; Colour; Size; Font. At the top of every reply box and edit box you will see the ribbon shown in the image above in this post. You can also add bullets points and other features.

How do I link to a Website in my post?


You can either copy and paste the website link or manually type it into your post.

For example:

www.irishtimes.com

How do I name a link to a Website?

When you are typing or editing your post your will see a ribbon of formatting and editing short cuts.

You want a link to the Irish Times website but instead of the URL, you want a button called Click Here to appear:

  • Type the words Click Here
  • Highlight the words
  • Click on the chain link in the formatting bar - Icon shown here:

  • Type or paste the link to the website (The URL) in the new Window that opens
  • Click on Insert

Et voilá:

Instead of:

www.irishtimes.com

You will get the button: Click Here (Place your mouse on the words Click Here to see the button)

Can I preview my post before I submit it?

Yes.

Click on the link called More Options... Below the reply box in the right-hand side. You will see the preview above your own post. You can continue to edit your own post before you submit it.

Can I edit my post after it's submitted?

Yes. You have a 48-hour window of opportunity to do this.

How do I edit my post?

At the bottom of your post you will see a link called Edit

  • Click on the link Edit
  • Make your changes
  • Click on Save Changes

How do I reply to a post in a thread?

Underneath the last post in a thread you will see a blank Reply box.

Click into the box and either ask a question or answer a question.

Click on Edit and then More Options if you wish to preview.

Click on the button Post Reply

What does the #8 mean at the bottom right-hand side in the post above this one?

All posts in a Thread are numbered. This one is #9


Can I create a labelled link to a specific post
?

Yes.

To create a labelled link to say the fifth post in this thread

  • Click on the link in the post #5
  • Copy and paste the code in the window that opens
  • Select Insert

I want to quote what somebody says in a post.

Go to the post to which you want to make a reply and click on the Reply button in the bottom right-hand corner of that post.

The entire post will be placed within quote brackets. You can delete the text that you don't need. However, this can be cumbersome is some of the very long posts.



Sample: I clicked on the Reply button on Post 6 above.

Can I preview my post before I submit it?

Yes.

Click on the link called More Options... in the reply box. You will see the preview above your own post. You can continue to edit your own post before you submit it.

I want to quote a snippet of somebody's post. How do I do this without having to quote the entire post?

Highlight the text you wish to quote. Then you will see the following shortcut

What is the + Quote button for?

This is useful when you want to quote a number of different comments from either the same post or different posts.

Sample: Using +Quote

Highlight the first comment you wish to quote and click on +Quote
Highlight the next comment you wish to quote and click on + Quote
Highlight the next comment you wish to quote and click on + Quote

At the bottom left-hand side of your post box you will see a new button called Insert Quotes. Image below

How will I know if somebody replies to my post? Or what if I'm interested in a particular thread. Can I be notified?

Well you can opt to Watch the thread if you wish. The link is at the top of the thread on the right-hand side. Click on the link called Watch Thread and the following window open.

  • Select your preferred option
  • Click Watch Thread

Why can’t I post in Letting off Steam or Shooting the Breeze?


Only Frequent Posters can post in The Depths. A Frequent Poster is somebody who has 51 posts and is registered with AAM for at least 30 days.
