Re: the Tesco credit card

I think they are bundling the club card benefit with the credit card benefit, which is a bit misleading, as it is not describing the credit card benefit on it's own.

You get 2 clubcard points for spending 2 euro using their excellent and free clubcard reward scheme, so the credit card is just giving you an extra point per 2 euro spent regardless if you spend it in tesco or somewhere else, although with tesco petrol you get an extra 1 point per euro spent.

I propose something like the following for your best buy;

Reward: 1 additional clubcard point per 2 euro spent anywhere. 1 additional clubcard point per euro spent on fuel at tesco filling stations. i.e. .5 to 1% back in form of vouchers for spending in tescos.

Please note that the points can be exchange for vouchers at 4 times their value, giving an effective cash back of up to 2-4%.

Or have I read it all incorrectly?

I have been using a Tesco visa card for a few years now and getting clubcard vouchers every quarter. I use it for all online purchases and any large purchases/bills eg holidays.
Recently I paid a €2,600 course fee which at 0.5% reward is a free €13 in clubcard vouchers. Annually I might get about €150 in vouchers which I mostly spend on Tesco groceries but I did convert €10 in vouchers for €40 of Milano restaurant vouchers which is a good conversion rate.

Hi CiaranT

MBNA will no longer offer AXA points. Their relatioship with AXA wil end on the 30 April. Existing customers will be able to redeem their points on home or car insurance with AXA until June 2013.

Hi Marion,

Thanks for letting me know.

Top post updated. The list of credit card reward schemes gets smaller and smaller !!

I am signed into the AmEx Reward Scheme - think you get 1 reward point for every € spent on the card. Can then redeem points for range of items from vouchers for retailers, charity donations, electrical goods, accessories etc. I recently traded some of mine in for a Tiffany bracelet and some bottles of wine :)

Admittedly I have this on the Corporate Green card scheme, but think any AmEx card can enrol in the scheme.

AIB Platinum is also good with the cashback, regularly see money credited to my account as a result.

I have updated the, now very brief, top post.

MBNA have removed the Irish Ryanair reward card for new customers.

The Ulster Bank rewards option, has been removed, as they are not accepting new customers and have not been for a while.

The AmEX card has been removed due to several reports of non-acceptance in Ireland.

Hence, there are only 2 reward cards left in Ireland, Tesco Credit Card and AIB Platinum.

A few years ago the top post had 18 reward credit cards. Now 2.

I've been looking into getting am American Express cards.

Their rewards schemes are quite good.

But are they accepted by most retailers in Ireland today? Had it improved recently?

Hi,

Can I ask if the opening post is up to date in terms of the best credit card offers available at the moment. Looking to get on to an interest free balance transfer if they still exist

The opening post deals with reward credit cards, not interest free periods. There are only 2 reward cards on the market, the Tesco Credit Card and the AIB Platinum Visa Card.

My first post :)
The New KBC Credit Card promises a 1% Reward on grocery shopping and online purchases.
This would make it the 3rd reward card in the Irish market.
I have checked with KBC, but they cannot provide me a list of shops in Ireland which fall under the "grocery" category under the MasterCard's MCC (Merchant Category Code); plus I am not sure that EVERY online purchase is entitled to the 1% reward (seems too good to be true).
Has anyone in the Askaboutmoney community have any further information on this ?
Thank you!

Just an FYI re Tesco.

Built up enough 'cash back' vouchers over the past 2 years to pay for the ferry for the family holiday to France this year (vouchers multiply to the value of 4 when gong for 1 of the deals).
And thats without shopping in Tesco!

Very interesting. Thanks for posting.

From a bit of Google searching, on how MCC codes work, it seems that most grocery stores, will fall under this reward, although it is not very clear.

It is a good reward.

I got quite excited there, until reading the KBC Credit Card Terms and Conditions:

The maximum reward that can be credited is €10 on each monthly statement.
